What Is Katonah Yoga?

Katonah Yoga has been quietly captivating serious practitioners for decades. This May 9-10, Present Practice is thrilled to welcome Abbie Galvin to Austin for a 15-hour Katonah training weekend, and we want you in the room!

So, what exactly is Katonah Yoga?

Katonah Yoga is a syncretic Hatha practice developed over 40 years by Nevine Michaan of Katonah Yoga Center. It weaves classical Hatha with Taoist theory, geometry, mythology, and metaphor into a practical system designed to awaken personal well-being. Think asana as origami, manipulating form for function, using measure instead of feeling to create structure. As Abbie says, “the goal of the Katonah yoga practice is to become spherical.” The result is a body that learns to fit itself.

What you'll explore over the weekend

The training is broken into four sessions, each available individually or as the full 15-hour program at a discounted rate.

Saturday opens with a Katonah Foundations Masterclass (10:30am-1pm), a deep dive into the fundamentals of asana and pranayama to help you access technique over impulse. The afternoon shifts into a 5-Hour Body Reading Intensive (2-7pm), where you'll learn to read the body like a map: observing poses, interpreting habits, and discovering what the body is quietly communicating.

Sunday's morning Masterclass (10:30am-1pm) focuses on developing a home practice, one rooted in ritual, commitment, and self-care. The weekend closes with a 5-Hour Restorative & Adjustments Intensive (2-7pm), exploring how props, touch, and technique can reshape a stressed or injured body and redirect patterns that no longer serve.

Who is this for?

This training meets you where you are, whether you're brand new to Katonah or have been practicing for years. Teachers looking to deepen their toolkit and students seeking genuine transformation are equally welcome.

Meet Abbie Galvin

Abbie is the owner of The Studio in NYC and has spent 25 years honing the Katonah practice. Her teaching draws from her work as both a filmmaker and a psychoanalyst, bringing a rare, layered understanding of how transformation actually happens. Her intention is to help each student become more grounded, more alive, and more fully themselves.

We are so honored to host her here in Austin.
